COVID-19 Rapid Tests

Easy to use — deliver a result in less than 30 minutes

The major advantages of rapid tests are:

  • they don't require the specialist lab equipment or scientific expertise that PCR tests do — which means they can be used on the spot, rather than being sent off for processing;
  • the results are provided in 15-30 minutes;
  • more people can be tested

Covid-19 rapid tests offer the possibility of testing more people with fewer resources in less time, and as such help controlling and prevent spreading of the virus.

How Covid-19 rapid tests work

Unlike PCR higher-grade genetic tests, which take several hours to process, rapid antigen tests are significantly less expensive and take 15 to 30 minutes to give a result.

The tests look for antigens, or proteins, found on the surface of the virus, and they are most effective if done in the first week of infection.

PCR tests are the preferred method for diagnostic testing because they have high sensitivity and specificity, thus they are more accurate. However, the high scale of testing that is required to prevent and combat further spread of pandemic has placed unprecedented pressure on the capacity of testing laboratories.

Covid -19 rapid tests are a complementary approach to PCR testing.

They could help screening people without symptoms to detect asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic infection that might otherwise go undetected. Covid-19 rapid tests could be also used in potentially transmission-prone places (large companies, workplaces, public places such as airports, train stations, cinemas, theatres, stadiums, concert halls among the others.
